“TEST SCORES SHOW HISTORIC COVID SETBACKS FOR KIDS ACROSS US” – AP News
Dear ICYO Friend and Supporter,
A recent AP News article reported, “The Covid-19 pandemic caused historic setbacks for America’s children, sparing no state or region as it erased decades of academic progress and widened racial disparities…”
Daniel, a 7th grade student at Alliance Academy, and his mom, Talisha, feel the impact Covid-19 has on their family every day. Just before the pandemic hit, Daniel entered ICYO’s academic intervention program reading at a first-grade level and on an IEP (Individualized Education Program). Just as he was getting support, the pandemic forced students back to their homes and Daniel was again without help from ICYO tutors and didn’t have technology at home to continue to learn.
Thanks to the relationship with Cincinnati Public Schools and ICYO, Daniel was able to receive a laptop to not only stay connected with his virtual classroom, but also to do virtual tutoring with ICYO tutors every day after school. While Daniel is now back in the classroom and attending the after school program in person, his learning slide due to the pandemic was substantial.
With the help of Daniel’s mom, communication with Daniel’s teachers, and ICYO volunteers bridging the gap, Daniel is making progress in his literacy skills, which helps him complete his homework, and stay engaged and in turn, increases his self-confidence!
This school year up to 60 students will receive after-school instruction and educational enrichment to help close the gap across several Cincinnati Public Schools. ICYO focuses on serving some our most vulnerable students and includes transportation, meals and program supplies for every child. This fully-subsidized, year-round program is made possible thanks to generous donors like you!
Your gift of $240.28 will provide a child like Daniel one month of life-changing, foundational skill development – imagine the confidence you can give a child as they grow from reading below-grade level by several grades to being a fluent, strong student and leader.
Please consider making your year-end, tax deductible donation today.
Thank you for making a great impact in our community by investing in our children’s education!
Sincerely,
